Refractory Engineering: Selection, Installation & Testing

Sector:
Industrial & Energy – Mechanical Systems
Technical Focus Area:
Operational Excellence & Performance (OPEX)
About the Course
Refractories are critical barriers in high-temperature equipment—furnaces, kilns, heaters, boilers, gasifiers—where premature lining failure drives unplanned outages, safety risks, and major cost. This course translates refractory science into field-ready practice: how composition, microstructure, and form influence resistance to temperature, mechanical load, thermal shock, abrasion, corrosion/slag attack, and creep.
Learning Milestones
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Classify refractory families by chemistry, form, and manufacturing route for specific services.
- Explain key properties (thermal, mechanical, chemical) and their impact on performance.
- Select fit-for-purpose materials and designs for furnaces, kilns, heaters, and boilers.
- Apply ASTM-aligned testing (physical/chemical/thermomechanical) and interpret results.
- Specify and oversee correct installation techniques for bricks and monolithics.
- Plan controlled drying/curing/heating to avoid steam spalling and cracks.
- Inspect linings in install and operation; detect early deterioration and defects.
- Perform structured failure analysis (RCA) to address root causes and improve reliability.
- Develop inspection/maintenance checklists and repair strategies that reduce downtime.
Professional Audience
- Refractory Engineers and Supervisors
- Maintenance & Reliability Engineers (high-temperature assets)
- Process/Operations Engineers for fired equipment and kilns
- QA/Inspection Personnel working with refractory linings

Modular Syllabus
Fundamentals & Standards—Refractories in Industry
- Role of refractories in high-temperature processes and asset integrity
- Categories by chemistry: basic, high-alumina, silica, SiC, carbon, zirconia
- Categories by form: bricks/shapes vs. monolithics (castables, gunning, ramming, plastics)
- Overview of ASTM standards for refractories and test methods
- Manufacturing technologies and implications for microstructure/performance
- Safety and environmental considerations in manufacture and use
- **Activity/Workshop:** Map service conditions of a heater/boiler/kiln to candidate refractory systems
