Piping and Instrumentation Diagram Development for Process Plants

Sector:
Chemicals & Process – Design and Simulation
Technical Focus Area:
Process Design & Simulation
About the Course
This course provides practical training in developing piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), covering how process design intent is translated into the detailed drawings used for engineering, construction, and operations. It is designed for engineers who produce or review P&IDs.
Participants examine P&ID symbols and conventions, instrumentation and control representation, and safety system depiction, building the practical skills needed to produce accurate, standards-compliant P&IDs. Case examples illustrate common P&ID errors and their downstream consequences.
Learning Milestones
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Develop a P&ID that accurately reflects process design intent.
- Apply standard P&ID symbols and conventions correctly.
- Represent instrumentation and control loops on a P&ID.
- Depict safety and relief systems accurately on a P&ID.
- Review a P&ID for completeness and consistency.
- Coordinate P&ID development across engineering disciplines.
Professional Audience
This course is ideal for engineers who develop or review P&IDs, including:
- Process and design engineers
- Piping engineers and designers
- Instrumentation and control engineers
- Project engineers
- HAZOP team members reviewing P&IDs
