About the Course
Managing shutdowns and turnarounds is a high-stakes, multidisciplinary effort that touches reliability, production, safety, supply chain, and finance. This course synthesizes best practices from seasoned turnaround professionals with emerging industry trends to provide a repeatable framework—covering strategy, scope development, work packaging, scheduling, controls, and closeout.
You will practice building WBS-driven scopes, applying critical path methods to overlapping projects, and setting up cost and progress control that works under real-world constraints. We’ll also tackle contractor engagement, materials logistics, and communication rhythms that keep teams aligned and responsive.
A strong emphasis is placed on safety, quality, and risk management. You’ll learn to integrate HSE and risk insights into planning and execution so the event is professionally rewarding and low-stress—delivering operational readiness with minimal disruption.
Objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Build a team-based, integrated approach to shutdown and turnaround planning and execution.
- Define and control scope using WBS, work packages, and readiness gates.
- Develop resource-loaded, logic-linked schedules using critical path methods.
- Establish budgets, track progress, and control costs and productivity in-flight.
- Plan materials and logistics to de-risk kitting, staging, and laydown constraints.
- Engage and manage contractors effectively, aligning roles, KPIs, and interfaces.
- Embed safety, quality, and environmental management into all STO phases.
- Apply risk management (identify, analyze, mitigate) and integrate it into the master plan.
